1969: May 31, 1969 SPAAAU District Veterans Championship at Orange Coast College.  Dewey Vroom won 3 events, Steve Seymour won JT at 169′-8″ .  Article states over 100 competitors ages 40 to 71 competed.  (Independent, Long Beach June 3, 1969)

1970: May 31, 1970 “Seniors Track SPAAAU Championship at Orange Coast College.”
Results are minimal in the LA Times – meet included Dan Aldrich, Willie (Willis) Kleinsasser, Joe Page, Bob Richards, Steve Seymour, Dewey Vroom, and Ross Winton. Joe Paige (40 plus) 5′-10″ high jump to surpass Bob Richards’ old (meet ?) record of 5′-4″  Reference:  (June 1, 1970 LA Times) and (San Bernardino Sun June 2, 1970)

1970: The June 13, 1970 LA Times mentions a Masters All Comers meet was scheduled June 13 at Orange Coast College
for the running events.  And the field events at Corona Del Mar High School.

1970:  June 1970 LA Senior Olympics.  Includes story and Meet Results. Olympians Art Barnard, Fortune Gordien, Boo Morcom, and Bob Richards competed at the meet.  (LA Times, June 21, 1970)

1970: July 1970 article mentions Bud Held, Bob Richards, and Richard Stolpe competing at the 1970 Masters National T&F Championship (Sacramento Bee, July 4, 1970).

1971: Jan 1971 Sunkist Invitational in LA. indoor Masters Mile: Peter Mundle  4:33.3, Jim Vantatenhove 4:35.9, Bill Fitzgerald 4:49.0 and Owen Gorman 4:49.2.  The Senior 60 dash:  Virgil McIntyre (59) 7.6, Gene Hawsen 8.0, Sen. Alan Cranston (56) 8.1, and Delmar Mitchelson 8.4   (San Francisco Examiner, Jan 17, 1971)

1971: Mar 1971. Peter Mundle competing at a senior all-comers meet at LA Valley College broke the 3 mile and 5000 m American Record in 15:07.7 and 15:37.5. The mark broke his record 15:42.7 from the 1970 LA Senior Olympics. Virgil Carter won the M60-69 100 meter, Jack Thatcher won the M50-59 12-Lbs SP, and meet director George Ker won the M40-49 16-Lb SP & DT.  The article include Meet results as well.  Next meet scheduled for April 3, 1971. 1971: April 1971  Grandfather Games.   Over 125 athletes competed in the meet. Fortune Gordien 159′ in DT; Eddie Halpin won 5 events; Virgil Mcintyre won 4 events. (Valley News, April 4, 1971)

1971: June 1971. 1971: The story mentions Dan Aldrich, Otis Chandler, Fortune Gordien, Bob Mathias, Parry O’Brien, David Pain, Bob Richards as still competing. The story continued with information on the Corona Del Mar Track Club  – and a couple of its members: Wayne Ambrose, Don Badinelli (43), Shirley Davisson (40), Dick Stolpe (42), and Don & Ross Winton (52) (LA Times July 3, 1971)

1972: The June 24, 1972 Redlands Daily Facts mentions a May 1972 Masters meet at Fullerton Univ.  A Dr. Bowman threw the javelin.

1972: June 1972 includes an article and picture of Al Guidet (54). The story mentions Otis Chandler, Alan Cranston, George Rhoden, and Dean Smith.  (Press Democrat, Santa Rosa, June 30, 1972)

1972: San Bernardino County Sun, CA, July 6, 1972 includes a story of Hal Connolly, Bob Fes, Jim Gorell, Ed Halpin, John Kelly, Joe Page, John Montoya, Lew Roberts, and Dean Smith competing at the July 1972 National Masters Outdoor Championship in San Diego.

1973: April 1973 Mt Sac Relays.  Fortune Gordien (50) competed in the DT  at 177′-9″ (Independent Press-Telegram, Long Beach, CA  April 29, 1973)

1973: April 1973 UCLA Meet of Champions.  Willis Kleinsasser finished 5th in the Senior 2-mile (LA Times, Apr 26, 1973)

1973: June 1973 Senior Olympics in LA:  Harold Chapson (70) won the 1500 m in 5:30.8, Hal Higdon (42) won the 3000 m steeple in 9:38, and Al Guidet (55) won the 220 in 23.6  (San Bernardino County Sun, CA, June 23, 1974)

1974: June 1974 Senior Olympics in LA includes pictures of Ted Mumby (75) 1st TJ and Edith Mendyka (60-64) 1st javelin. (San Bernardino County Sun, CA, June 23, 1974)

1975: June 8, 1975 the Los Angeles Times reported that on June 7, 1975: Bill Fitzgerald set a M50 World Record in the Mile at 4:37.1 and M50 American Record in the 880 yard at 2:07.2

1975: July 1975 the article mentions Peter Thomaasen (70) competing at the first West Region Masters T&F Championship. Meet held at Laney College, Oakland. (Paradise Post, Paradise, CA, July 11, 1975)

1975: Desert Sun, July 19, 1975 reports that Ray Hatton (43) broke the American Masters Mile Record in an all-comers meet in 4:24.0 (better the prior record by three-tenths).  (Desert Sun newspaper, July 19, 1975)

1977: The Jan 28, 1977 Santa Ana Register ran an add for the February 1977 Reader’s Digest to include an article on Masters T&F.

1979:  Los Angeles Times, Nov 8, 1979 includes a Masters athletes with stories and photos of Bill Fitzgerald, George Ker, George Maconaghy, Peter Mundle, Nick Newton, and Tom Patsalis. (Similar article ran Oct 21, 1979 in the Centinela South Bay edition)

1977:  Santa Ana Register, CA, June 23, 1977 included an article on 74 years old star Harold Chapson winning races at Westwood, West Region Championship, South Africa, and other meets.  Regarding Chapson’s single-age-records, “The marks are compiled by Peter Mundle, who works for Track and Field News and is a Masters runner himself.”

1978: June 17-18, 1978 Shirley Deitderich set a W50-54 400 meter American Record at the Masters West Region meet at Los Gatos (Berkley Gazette, CA, June 21, 1978) (LA84: NorCal Running Review July-Aug 1978) (NMN Autumn 1978)

1978: June 17-18, 1978 Brian Oldfield and other Olympians competed at the AAU Regional Masters T&F Meet at Los Gatos (The Modesto Bee, June 20, 1978).  Other Olympians included Phil Conley, Ron Laird, Ron Whitney, and Herm Wyatt (LA84: NorCal Running Review July-Aug 1978) (NMN Autumn 1978)

Late 1970s / early 1980s the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, CA ran several articles featuring pole vaulter James Vernon.

1980: July 26, 1980 Redlands Evening Kiwanis’ first Masters Meet held at Redlands Stadium. Meet results are listed in the newspaper (San Bernardino County Sun, CA, Aug 3, 1980).

1981: Los Angeles Times, July 15, 1981 includes stories of several Masters Track and Field “stars.”  Jeanne Carter, Hal Chapson, Bill Fitzgerald, Bess James, Payton Jordan, Boo Morcom, Nick Newton, Percy Knox, Al Sheahen, Paul Spangler, Jerry Wojcik, and Vern Wolfe. Some 1981 Masters meets mentioned were the Senior Olympics at USC (June 1981), TFA Pacific at UCLA, Corona Del Mar Relays, Pan Am Games at USC, and TAC Masters National Championships.

1981: July 18, 1981. George Rhoden (55+) and Mack Robinson (62) competed in a Converse celebrity triathlon at UCLA. (Times-Advocate, Escondido, CA, Jul 21, 1981). Others that competed were Jerry Morro, Mike Larrabee, John Pennel, Dave Thorseson, and Bill Toomey (NMN Sept 1981).

1984: Story on James Vernon and his “pre-bent pole” for the pole vault. “Vernon used a computer to perfect his style  … programmed it with a series of variables such as approach speed and pole flexibility … ” (Iowa City Press-Citizen, Iowa City, Iowa, Mar 5, 1984)

2004: Chino Champion newspaper, Chino, CA, April 24, 2004: Kevin Morning, Frank Strong, Cornell Stephans, and Willie Gault set a new Masters Age Record (M40-49) in the 4 x 100 meter relay at Mt Sac Relays in 42.72

2011: Sacramento Bee, CA, July 14, 2011: “On Saturday evening, in warm conditions, former NFL wide receiver Willie Gault ran a blistering 10.96 in the 100-meter dash . .  .”
